Everest Treks Personal Medical Kit

Trip leaders will carry a complete first aid kit for group use. It is strongly advised that each trekker bring their own personal medical kit. Listed are some of the suggestions we have for being a prepared traveler.

 

Please contact your personal physician about any special  needs that  you may have.

 

 

General Supplies:

ƒ        Bandages: Band-Aids, gauze pads.

ƒ        Elastic bandage (4” wide) for minor sprains.

ƒ        Moleskin for prevention of blisters.

ƒ        Box of towelettes for cleaning hands.

ƒ        Thermometer

ƒ        Tissues

ƒ        Scissors or pocket knife.

ƒ        Small case to hold medications and supplies.

 

 

Prescription Items:

ƒ        Allergy medication such as Ana-Kit Insect Sting Treatment Kit or Epi Pen (both contain an emergency injection of epinephrine) should be carried by travelers with severe allergies to stinging insects (bees, wasps, yellow jackets. etc.).

ƒ        Antibiotics may be useful for travelers at risk for skin infections or upper respiratory infections.  Please consult your personal physician.

ƒ        Asthma medication should be carried by trekkers with a history of asthma or pulmonary problems

ƒ        Diarrhea Treatment and/or antibiotic may be prescribed for treatment. It is not recommended that antibiotics be used for prevention of diarrhea.  Please consult your personal physician.

ƒ        Mountain Sickness treatment such as Diamox, which is a prescription drug that has proven very useful in assisting people in adjusting to high elevations.

ƒ        Jet Lag: in some cases a short -acting sleeping medication is helpful in treating sleeping problems associated with jet lag.

ƒ        Pain Relief and Cough Suppression a prescription pain medication should be carried by travelers in case of severe headache, muscoskeletal pain or cough.


 

 

Non-Prescription Items:

ƒ        Aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for -general relief of minor aches and pains or headache.

ƒ        Antibiotic ointment for topical application on minor cuts and abrasions.

ƒ        Antifungal powder or cream for travelers prone to athletes’ foot and/or other fungal skin problem.

ƒ        Allergy tablets for common allergies.

ƒ        Decongestant tablets for nasal congestion due to mild colds or allergies.

ƒ        Diarrhea Treatment such as Pepto-Bismol or Imodium tablets for symptomatic treatment and/or, prevention of diarrhea.

ƒ        Hydrocortisone cream (1%) for topical relief of itching due to insect bites or sunburn.

ƒ        Insect repellent for topical application.

ƒ        Motion Sickness remedy for the treatment of a common ailment of travelers using local modes of transportation in foreign countries.

ƒ        Powdered electrolyte mix to be mixed in safe water for fluid replacement and rehydration during severe diarrhea.

ƒ        Sunscreen & lipscreen SPF 15 or higher.

ƒ        Water purification’ tablets a bottle of iodine tablets or an iodine crystal water purification kit.

ƒ        Skin cleanser for cleansing of minor cuts and abrasions.

ƒ        Throat lozenges useful for soothing “Trekker’s Cough” and other common causes of minor throat irritation.
